  2. Also, I will try not to make this a thread about my Blue Jays, who have now taken the mantle of consecutive non-postseason appearances, despite the seeming advantage of never having particularly sucked like the Royals, Pirates, Orioles, etc.

KC will be an interesting team in the playoffs. They’re a postseason team without the benefit of being particularly good or having any great players (save Alex Gordon, who is the most criminally underrated player in baseball right now, but isn’t the sort of show-stopping pendulum-swinging player that you normally think of). And, honestly, I say that with respect.

They say that defense wins championships. They also say that about the ability to close out games. And they say it about hustle and heart. The Royals have those three things.

And…those are the only three things they have. More traditional metrics like “offense” and “pitching”, not so much.

But that’s kind of the great thing too. You could totally see their complete lack of pop, historical inconsistency of their starting pitching, and idiot management relegating them to a one-and-done team who gets smoked 14-2 by Oakland in a Wild Card game.

But you could also see them going all the way ala the ’85 team on the strength of starting pitching stepping up immaculately and being untouchable (which they are capable of doing on any given day), an offense that can manufacture runs with the best of them, a lockdown defense, a depth (bench and bullpen) that will all grind like hell, and the best late-inning relief in the business (man is that 7-8-9 good). And, I dunno, but that seems as good a recipe for success in the postseason as anything. And, this is a year when even the leading teams look fairly pedestrian – honestly the ALDS will probably wind up being the hardest, and whoever can beat the Orioles and Angels will be in pretty good shape, coming out of the American League.

    So yeah, Royals.
