Ron Paul wins the…wait, wins the WHAT?

Don’t ask me, man. I don’t understand it either. It’s not as if the man lacks values, and it’s not as if libertarianism is incompatible with them…it’s just that this seems like the LAST constituency which would buy into either idea.

  1. He’s radically pro-life and radically anti-gay. Why wouldn’t the VVS love him?

  2. Refresh my mind: what anti-gay policies has he endorsed which are not better explained as being pro-individual rights?

  3. If previous Kip comments and posts from his former blogger life are correct in my memory, this comes down to Paul being so supportive of States’ “rights” that many critics see him as comfortably supportive of 50 different state versions of anti-gay policies, so long as its not done an a national level. IIRC, its not even that clear cut a division, since during his 2008 campaign he opposed repeal of DADT, and has sided with legislation which limited gay rights and abortion access in D.C, and opposed federal funding of abortion related medical care for service members stationed overseas.

  4. Confusingly, he has also expressed support for DOMA, only to walk it back, and he subsequently reversed his position on DADT; he now favors inclusion. His stances on gay rights issues are, frankly, incoherent. I don’t think even he knows where he stands on these matters on a day-to-day basis; he seems to be one of those people who’s been personally uncomfortable with homosexuality his whole life and who is only now coming to terms with it as a societal reality and squaring it with the rest of his ideology. But that’s a charitable reading and I wouldn’t expect Kip to buy it.

He’s as pro-life as they come.

  5. It won’t satisfy those committed to believing he’s a conscious and crusading bigot, nor will it satisfy those of us who wish to believe he’s a force for social liberation, but your explanation I think has the benefit of being true.

  6. This thread could really benefit from a seemingly random comment about low cost loans. Like so many of our other posts of late.
