Music Video of the They Might Be Giants Awareness Day

(because that’s today)

While this one’s my favorite, and this one the most burned in my memory, this is the one I wind up singing to myself the most, probably once a week for the last ten years (really!)(close second).

  1. For me, TMBG hit a very clear jump-the-shark point when they expanded from the two Johns into the full lineup. Up until that point, I had purchased every album they’d recorded. I’ve bought nothing sense.

I really don’t know why so much changed for me at that point–it probably didn’t help that “Snail Shell”, which did nothing for me, hit big at that time, and also that I saw them play a really, really bad show (by any standard–just completely joyless and perfunctory) at the Granada in Lawrence.

  2. They didn’t actually wind up jumping the shark – although I had the same thought around Snail Shell too. Actually, they wound up doing a jack knife, away from indie/college rock and much more in the novelty direction (kids albums, specifically). Which sort of wound up almost purer, somehow, if less essential.

  3. To be sure, there was a charm in their drum machine.

Youtube stupidly removed the video that introduced me to TMBG. I’ve searched long and hard to bring this fine music to you folks but it’s from a bit of a weird website and is audio only so I’m hoping the embedding occurs without a hitch.
