Something tells me Brad will like this…

I certainly do. This is the one of the most awesome blend of musical genres I’ve ever heard:

Gangstagrass – Pistol Packing

  1. That’s fantastic. Good find – I’ve never heard of them. And you’re correct, it’s right up my alley.

It reminds me a lot of Bubba Sparxxx, who has gone from being a guilty pleasure of mine to somebody I advocate quite a bit as underrated (I list his 2003 album Deliverance as one of the best of the decade, and if anything if I did that list today I’d probably rate it higher). It’s definitely rap in genre, just a conscious decision, in Bubba’s case, to play up his Southern whiteness, and in these guys’ case, to use bluegrass/country samples. But both do it very, very naturally. Here’s a good one from Bubba. Here’s another:

I always thought that rap, as a genre, had a lot of untapped potential in terms of heavy sampling of other genres, beyond funk and the occasional rock. There are some fantastic rap / r & b songs set to classical music, for instance (try this one, or better yet):

And these guys prove that bluegrass can be the same way.

Of course, that’s rap. There’s also plenty of potential for country artists to go the other way, although most efforts along those lines have been more gimmicks or novelty than anything. Not that that’s always a bad thing, if done well.

  2. P.S. don’t forget to append the Videos tag to these posts – that’s the only tag I actively use.

  3. So Cameron, I can’t help but notice that they have a new album out, and are now like the official soundtrack of the TV show Justified (never seen).

And that they happen to be playing a live show in a Fish Town bar here in Philly on 4-20.
