Ladies and Gentlemen, Your American War Effort

There have been a lot of leaked stories over the last month about solid progress in brokering peace between Afghanistan’s Karzai-led government and the Taliban, enough to make it seem like there was finally some hope.

Survey sez

KABUL, Afghanistan — For months, the secret talks unfolding between Taliban and Afghan leaders to end the war appeared to be showing promise, if only because of the appearance of a certain insurgent leader at one end of the table: Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour, one of the most senior commanders in the Taliban movement.

But now, it turns out, Mr. Mansour was apparently not Mr. Mansour at all. In an episode that could have been lifted from a spy novel, United States and Afghan officials now say the Afghan man was an impostor, and high-level discussions conducted with the assistance of NATO appear to have achieved little.

“It’s not him,” said a Western diplomat in Kabul intimately involved in the discussions. “And we gave him a lot of money.”

  2. Don’t worry though. We are SURE that the 16-year-old we picked up off the street in Karbala during some late night raid in 2004 based on a tip from a local is a Very Important Terrorist who is the Worst of the Worst and who we can’t risk having be released or found not guilty or not tortured. The Global War on Terror depends on it!

Again, how Republicans ever convinced themselves that the government they find incompetent in most everything at home suddenly becomes hypercompetent in war times and zones, is utterly beyond me.
