The Second Dumbest Thing Anybody Has Said About the World Cup

John Doyle: people bitching about diving are racist because they don’t understand that brown people are theatrical and diving is thus integral to their cultural idiom, so we should view it with understanding and embrace as we would any cultural difference.

  1. The article borders on insanity.

The idea that Latin American nations and dark-skinned people are the predominant divers is flat-out wrong. If I were to isolate one player for diving, it would be Christiano Ronaldo. If I were to isolate one nation, it would be Italy. Even those players from LDCs who dive overwhelmingly picked up the technique by playing in European leagues.

Moreover, if I were to isolate any cultures in which the stoic endurance of pain and negative emotion were considered the epitome of manliness, I would find it harder to find better examples than in parts of Latin America.

  2. All of this setting aside, of course, the fact that simulation is AGAINST THE RULES OF THE GAME. Perhaps Mr. Doyle will give us a list of the rules he’d prefer not be enforced?

  3. Weirdly, after 12 paragraphs of Pappa Doyle lecturing his countrymen on their cultural insensitivity in condemning diving, even Doyle winds up conceding:

Of course, FIFA, soccer’s governing body, could try harder to curb diving. More consistent refereeing. Instant red card for the guy whose simulation of a foul was blatant. The World Cup would be better for that.

Making the entire article just a hollow excuse to look progressive and multicultural, in the most tin-eared racialist language imaginable.
