Things Ed Brayton Doesn’t Care About

Currently, the Notre Dame flap tops his list. I think swine flu currently tops mine. I mean…it’s the flu. A mildly more exotic version of…the flu.

But still: Ed, stop stealing my features!

Great moments in ambivalence past include Jeremiah Wright, Paris Hilton, and immigration.

  1. The swine flu thing seems to be working out reasonably well. But I don’t think that the initial media or public reactions were out of proportion given the facts. When an airborne pathogen mutates into something capable of killing people under the age of forty, it is better to overreact than to underreact.

Plus we have increased attention to unsanitary agricultural practices, which is worth a brief scare.

I can see the case for worrying about the Notre Dame thing, though I don’t personally share the concern. A Catholic university in the United States has to walk a difficult line; it is difficult to be simultaneously a provider of divinely ordained truths and a participant in an open marketplace of ideas. The decision to let Obama speak there seems to prioritize the latter over the former–so, if I were a strong advocate of the former, I’d be pissy about it.
