Why Vote?

A compelling answer. PSA from North Carolina:

  2. Awesome. The words of the guy at 28 seconds in were…unexpected.

  3. It’s pretty cool but it’s not a compelling answer to ‘why vote?’ (although to be honest, it’s hard to find a compelling answer in many cases). A lot of it could perhaps be seen as being linked to this particular election and the candidates in it, too, which is part of why it’s funny/interesting, but makes it less compelling as ‘answer’.

Of course, it’s a high bar. For most people, it’s irrelevant whether they vote. Even though NC is ‘in play’ for once, it’s also relatively irrelevant there, I think, because if NC turns Obama’s already won (and he will win). The best reason to vote in NC isn’t to affect the outcome; I think that it’s to help break the chains of state partisanship, but that’s not what the clip is mostly about. What the clip does do, of course, is show that there isn’t a ‘right’ answer as to why one should vote, so in that sense it’s not a compelling answer to ‘why vote’ but, rather, a compelling answer to questions about whether there’s a right reason to vote. In essence, ‘you can vote because you can’ is the message, which is a worthy one, but not an answer to the question of why you should.
