Ah, Jack Murtha.
Jack Murtha, the Whore on the Hill (and erstwhile Hillary supporter), has been fighting the good fight for Obama in Murtha’s home area of lobbyist pocket lint Western Pennsylvania. Going beyond Ed Rendell’s more delicately-phrased “not ready” explanation of Obama’s relative troubles in Pennsylvania earlier in the year, Murtha last week called some of his fellow West Pennsylvanians racist before this week graciously getting back on-message and calling them rednecks instead.
The individuals in question may be too occupied with clinging to their guns and religion to have been up for grabs anyhow, but while I personally think that both candidates have been pretty good about the race/racist issue, all things considered, this is getting pretty dull. I can only wait with excitement to see how such sparkling fountains of wit and charm of Murtha’s calibre will respond when the soon-to-be President Obama is criticised. Fortunately, Murtha himself isn’t going anywhere (although ‘into retirement’ would be sweet, I guess).
Democrats would do well to just shut up for a few weeks.

Team Obama presumably knows that, but shutting Jack Murtha up seems like a feat of some difficulty. Of course, even if everything went wrong in PA, Obama can afford to lose it.

Honestly, I don’t think dumb shit like this will cease should Obama win the presidency. I suspect partisans in certain quarters and on both sides will happily engage in this horseshit for however long the public allows them to.
Maybe that’ll be a good thing. Most likely not. My suspicion is this will only go away as older generations die and younger ones rise to power used to the idea of a more diverse representation of the populace in power.

Well, that was sort of my point; people like Murtha are presumably going to cast criticism of President Obama as racism, and critics of Obama are going to accuse them of using race as a bludgeon with which to fend off legitimate complaints.
