Down With the Queen!

the UN Human Rights Council has suggested that Britain throw off the yoke of monarchy and “consider holding a referendum on the desirability or otherwise of a written constitution, preferably republican”.

Don’t worry guys, that’s what the EU is for.

  1. Yes, there should be a moratorium on monarchies until Eurabia has completed its formation, right Adam?

  2. Out of mild curiosity, how would that work for the royal family do you suppose?

What would happen to the land and the money (and the fabulous jewelry)? Does it become the property of the state or stay in the family? Would Harry and William have to learn how to live on junior officer salaries? Would the queen receive a pension?

  3. I don’t know. The only recent example I can think of of a country going from a monarchy to an ostensible democracy is Nepal, but being overthrown by communists doesn’t really count.

I’m sure they would take care of them (just pass a special bill, is what we’d do, setting them up for life), and the property and whatnot would probably be funneled to the state, where liquid, or set up as a historical museum or something.

Not that there’s any chance of Britain overthrowing their monarchy, mind. That’s not the British way. It would be too impolite.

  4. Liz, some of the possessions of the Royal Family (such as Windsor Castle, I think) belong to them (the House of Windsor, indeed, as they are now known) and some of them are owned by the state (such as, I believe, Buckingham Palace). I imagine the state would retain the state-owned ones and the Royals would get the rest.

The UNHRC perhaps don’t fully understand how practically powerless the monarchy is whilst also not understanding how embedded it is in Britain’s effective constitution. There are, perhaps, better things on which to focus.

  5. Yeah, completely unlikely, and I’m sure they’d be taken care of if it did come to pass.

Just had the oddest image in my head of Prince Charles handing over the keys of Buckingham Palace to one of the guards with the furry hats (I should know what they’re called) and then hailing a taxi in the rain.

  6. Thanks Adam.

I wasn’t sure where the family property begins and English property ends.

    Just an idle thought.
