Weird Tidbit of the Day

Anyone know who was the only United States congressman in American history to be killed in the line of duty?

Representative Leo Ryan of CA-11, who was shot to death on a remote airstrip in Guyana, along with his personnel, while investigating Jim Jones and the People’s Temple in 1973.

Also shot that day was one of Ryan’s aides, Jackie Speier, who took five bullets and laid bleeding on the tarmac for 22 hours before help finally arrived.

In a weird twist of fate, Speier now looks set to be elected to Congress herself, poised to win…her old boss’s seat.

Now that’s a story.

  1. If Jack Murtha chokes on his own pomposity, will that count as a death in the line of duty?
