Centcom head Fallon steps down
It was reported yesterday that Secretary of Defense Gates was keeping mum about an earlier report in Esquire that Adm. William Fallon, head of US Central Command, was soon to be replaced thanks in large part to opposing the use of military force against Iran. Today it was announced that Fallon is retiring early and in his statement (reproduced here at TPM) it’s pretty clear that the article was a key component and one presumes, given the absence of denials when the article came out, that there was truth in what the article said.
At times like this, the poor choice of McCain’s “Bomb Iran” joke is highlighted. Also, does Bush just plan to keep appointing senior military commanders until one agrees with him?
If he had made a particularly clumsy exit after his announcement, your headline could have been, “Fallin’ Down Steps, Fallon Steps Down.”

Frankly, I’m surprised he lasted this long.
